Traveling to Oaxaca City
Oaxaca is a vibrant, historic city in southern Mexico—and luckily, it’s quite easy to reach and super walkable! Below are some helpful tips for booking flights and planning your arrival.
Flights
-
Best Option: Fly direct into Oaxaca International Airport (OAX) located about 25-30 minutes south of the city center.
-
Cities such as Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), and Los Angeles (LAX) often have seasonal or daily nonstop flights into OAX.
-
-
Alternative Route: Mexico City stopover — Fly into Mexico City (MEX) and then connect on a short, one-hour flight to Oaxaca. Airlines like Aeroméxico, Volaris, and VivaAerobus offer multiple daily departures.
Arrival & Transportation
Upon landing at OAX, you’ll make your way to the city center.
-
Best Option: Take one of the private or shared taxis/vans available inside the airport. After baggage claim, walk past the rental car kiosks inside on the left to find the taxi stands on the right.
-
You'll have two options (credit cards accepted):
-
1) Private SUV / Van — direct to Zone 1 (approx. $26.40 USD total)
-
2) Shared Van / "Colectivo" — to Zone 1 (approx. $7.35 USD per person)
-
If you choose the shared option, you may need to wait until there are at least six passengers before departure.

-
Uber is available in Oaxaca, but it may take longer or cost more.

Travel Tips
-
Getting Around Oaxaca: The historic center is highly walkable, with most hotels, restaurants, and venues within easy reach. Many streets are cobblestone so we recommend block heels, wedges, or comfortable flats at all times. You will not need a rental car or taxi for any of the events for the wedding weekend.
-
Book hotels and flights early! Routes to Oaxaca are becoming more popular every day and often sell out — especially around weekends. The weekend after our wedding marks the start of Día de los Muertos, the city’s biggest celebration, so hotels will book up quickly.
-
Considering a Mexico City layover? Spend a night or two in CDMX to enjoy the capital before continuing on to Oaxaca. We love it there — ask us for recommendations!
-
About Oaxaca: It's a beautiful colonial city where everything beautiful and intriguing lies just behind that big wooden door! It's historic, charming and some parts are rustic. Every hotel will provide you with bottled drinking water for daily use and teeth brushing. It's also in an earthquake-prone region, so most buildings are only 3-4 stories tall. It's very rare to find an elevator. Expect stairs!

U.S. passports should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. No visa is required.
-
Leave passports in your hotel room when exploring.
-
Credit cards are accepted in most places; however, pesos are appreciated for small vendors and tips.
-
The exchange rate is currently around 18.50 MXN per 1 USD.
-
Standard tip ("propina") in Mexico is about 10%, or more if you're feeling generous.
